Lets talk about I want to eat your pancreas/Kimi no Suizō o Tabetai - #1
The title of “I want to eat your
pancreas” may have the wrong effect and the title may mislead but this I am
sure you will change your mind about it and realize the beautiful meaning it
has once you read this blog.
We would normally think in a title like this would be something gory or zombie-related but it could not be farther from the truth but it is, in fact, it is a heartwarming and beautiful film.
The movie starts with Sakuras (the female protagonist) funeral (not a spoiler) where we see all her friends and family crying. I know, a pretty unexpected start huh. that is where we see the boy being cooped up in his house surrounded by books.
The female protagonist of the movie suffers from an incurable disease in her pancreas and will die for sure in due time (not a spoiler). She has around some months to live when she meets a studyholic boy who has no friends whatsoever i.e is an introvert and only cares about studies. He thinks it doesn't matter to him what others think till he does not get hurt. Due to an accident, he reads her diary in which she wrote about her disease and what little time she has to live. None of her friends know about this disease and now a random person knows about it who is in her class she doesn't know about. NICE
But she is good at making friends so she hangs out with him or how else will the story progress, it doesn't need to be logical. Even though he doesn't give a damn about her she still keeps hanging out with her and not to mention the fact that he makes the entire class jealous and sakura's best friends but does not give a damn. Gotta give it to him for that. They both slowly form a bond that seems a little one-sided at first but eventually becomes double-sided.
The story gets absolutely beautiful after that where we see a great deal of depth in the story with awesome character development which is just mesmerizing. The girl is very bold and daring with her thoughts and guy being a lonely introvert makes a very good combo for the story. The depth the story has is just crazy and symbolism is out of this world. During this movie, we witness both the characters' hardships and their dispute them being on the opposite end of the social strata.
The fact that being on the opposite ends of society and still being able to form that connection and we get to see that journey is just gorgeous. This movie has some very unexpected twist and may seem like a cliche movie but one could not be far from the truth.
I would like to talk about the title because it is a very integral part of the story and carries a deep meaning to it. The title is pretty complex to understand and there are different meanings to it by different people and I want to tell you guys mine.
There were 2 meanings actually according to me and it may get confusing
. In the olden times, if you had any problem with
some organ of your body, you can eat the same organ from someone else and you
will be cured
Eg you can eat a stomach to cure
your stomach
Now, this may look like what the title is trying to tell but no actually this is not it, this was actually given
on a very light note by Sakura in a normal chat and has the sole purpose of
laying the foundation. This was probably used as a joke by her as it is in her character.
According to me, the real meaning is this one, If you eat any organ of a person his soul will forever live on with you after his death. This is the actual meaning that should come to your mind in the end. When the guy texted her this, it was his way of saying "I love you" as in he wants to eat his pancreas so that they can stay together for all eternity. This is something that is told right in the beginning, the movie starts with the scene of her funeral and him still wondering did she read his message before dying. The message being -“I want to eat your pancreas”
This start not only interests the reader by creating suspense as to what does this message means. It also brilliantly catches the viewers' attention and it's now as if they are being forced to watch this movie since they now cant leave it.
There is also a post-credit scene in this movie so don't forget to watch that. Don't forget to get your tissues before this movie as there is a high chance you may start crying.
